Being Here

Almost every day of the year includes a walk with our two dogs. Mostly, we walk along the road we live on.  Some days we go to the nearby tree farm or one of several meadows and soccer fields for off-leash all-out running.

A few times a year, when the change in seasons is most visible and therefore most resonant, we walk around the town cemetery.  Established in 1807, the place is full of simple plantings and poignant storylines made visible by dates and names on old lichen and moss-covered headstones.   On these particular walks what rises up, always, is gratitude and what comes to mind, always, is Horton’s “Whos,” who so urgently and effectively insist: We are here, we are here, we are here!

Were I to recommend a universal New Year’s resolution, it would be that with every bite of food we remember that we are here.  From this place, it’s the most natural thing in the world to bring our consciousness and care to our daily choices, and to honor the bodies we’re living in and the earth we’re living on.

Happy New Year.
